Pen off @ 5:47 PM Letter of Complaint
21 April 2010 Mrs Saraspathy Menon Chong Boon Secondary School Principal Dear Mrs Menon UNPLEASANT INCIDANTS AT THE SCHOOL CANTEEN I often eat lunch in the canteen after school before going home. However, there is this time i encountered some incidents which happened and we are unhappy about it. I am writing to you about these incidents and hope something can be done to it, to make the canteen a better place for students to eat and study. A group of upper sec students came down for their lunch. They were making alot of noises when they are heading towards the direction of the canteen as I can hear them from the canteen even when they are quite far away. The moment they reached, they ran and competed with each other to the store vendors and for those who had bought their meals sat down and chatted very loudly. Some students were also annoyed by them, so they requested to them to quiet down. Yet they looked at each other, laughed loudly at them and continued eating their lunch and having the time of their own. They even made a mess in the canteen and just left. There was a time there are some normal technical students creating havoc in the canteen using it as playing grounds for them. they throw food around, making a mess despite the complains and advice from the cleaners in the school. It is impossible to eat or study in a safe and clean environment in that way. Canteens are meant to be a place where we can eat and enjoy our time in the safe environment there. I hope you would take some actions against those selfish and undisciplined students. Yours sincerely, Cherie Yong Respect 2

Pen off @ 8:30 AM Reflective Summary
What i had learnt; I learnt that many rhinoceros in the world are dying, and is suffering on the verge of extinction! There very few rhinoceros left in the world, only eight of them are surviving, six in Czech republic and two in the US. Many heavily armed poachers are aiming for them, and probably planning to catch them right now! My Perspective; After reading the articles and all that research, i then found out that the amount of white rhinos are really decreasing extremely fast for the past few years. Before that, i do not know a thing about their survival and lifestyle. My thoughts; I think that many people should stand up and have their say. Of course, to stop poaching and try hard to conserve the white rhinoceros while there are left. And i think and hope that all the poachers are arrested. Its inhuman to kill a animal just for own gains. Help in a role to play; I can advise my friends and family to spread to all their friends about the endangered species and animals and of course to stop poaching! Pen off @ 8:13 AM White Rhinoceroshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_RhinocerosThe White Rhinoceros is one of the five species of rhinoceros that still exist and is one of the few megafaunal species left. It has a wide mouth used for grazing and is the most social of all rhino species. The White Rhino is the least common of all rhinos and consists of two subspecies: the Southern White Rhino, with an estimated 17,480 wild-living animals at the end of 2007. The Northern White Rhinoceros, formerly found in several countries in East and Central Africa south of the Sahara, is considered Critically Endangered or Extinct in the wild. As of 2006, there were only four Northern White Rhinos left in the wild according to the WWF. However, in June 2008 it was reported that the subspecies may have become extinct in the wild since none of these four known remaining individuals have been seen since 2006. I think that we should really conserve and stop poaching.

Pen off @ 7:23 AM Czech zoo sends rare Northern White rhinos to Kenya.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8423243.stm Four rare Northern White rhinos have been flown from a Czech zoo to Kenya, in a desperate attempt to save the species from extinction. Animal experts hope the rhinos - two males and two females - will breed in their natural habitat in Africa. Only eight Northern White rhinos are known to survive worldwide, all of them in captivity: six in the Czech Republic and two in the US. The last four living in the wild in Africa have not been seen since 2006. The article also says that returning these animals to their natural habitat, they were hoping that the females would become more fertile, and the males will be interested in the females. So that they could continue to reproduce. This article made known to me that, the importance of the reproduction process for the white rhinos as the number of its species left is very limited. Before reading the article, i thought that they were normally producing their offspring instead of being enclosed in the zoo, not letting them to be freely moving around in their natural habitat. Pen off @ 7:10 AM White Rhino numbers are 'halved'.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3542060.stm Africa's only surviving population of northern white rhinoceros has been reduced by 50% in the last 14 months due to poaching, conservationists say. IUCN, the World Conservation Union, says there are between 17 and 22 animals left in their last refuge in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This represents a loss of between 14 and 19 rhinos in 14 months since the last survey - a 50% crash in numbers. Before reading this article, i thought that there were more than 50 or probably a greater amount of white rhinos left in Africa. I could not believe that currently the amount was left less than 30-40. All this happened blamed on the heavily-armed poaches. To me, i think just because of the poachers trying to gain money from poaching all the white rhinos, compared to the survival of the white rhinos, i think they should be more environmentally conscious. Poaching the animals also have a few cases of deaths, the park guards are struggling to contain this insurgency and several have lost their lives in anti-poaching operations. I really hope all this poaching would stop.

Pen off @ 7:01 AM Total Defence Day
This year's Total Defence Day was held together with the Chinese New Year celebrations. Personally, i do not like the activities held for the part of Total Defence Day for that day. Its 'boring'? To me. But it does help us to learn more about the country, and how we're prepared for the future. There were stations or booths opened by our school's Uniformed Groups like NPCC, NCC, Red Cross Youth. And we were also on food rationing that day, so the canteen was closed, and we are only to eat a bun and a bottle of water. Many thanks to the sponsers that sponsered our school the food and drinks. Its a meaningful experience for me. Pen off @ 6:47 AM Chinese New Year/ Hari Raya / Deepavali Celebrations
We celebrated Chinese New year along with Hari Raya and Deepavali on the 12th of February together with Total Defence Day. Honestly, i find the Total Defence Day activities were boring, but on the bright side, i love the performances by students from our school and our teachers. There were Chinese Dancers, Malay Dancers and Indian Dancers, ranging from different races performing that day. There were also Lion Dance arranged by a teacher from the school. All the performances must be rehearsed many times before the actual performance, from the performance they showcased. On the average, i really love the activities planned and i appreciate all the work and effort put in to pull all this together. |
